I took this pic during my recent visit to NYC. This is one of my all time favorites. The history behind the Ellis Island is quite mind boggling. From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. People have travelled thousands of miles by ship to reach this point with a sole dream of making a living in the US… Many American dreams entered through this port… So many people today in the US are able to trace their ancestors back to this point.
I have tried to capture the view that most people would have seen just standing in front of that gate. It would have been quite emotional – Ecstasy for reaching that place alive and on the other hand would have been really nervous about the immigration process hoping to get in… (I know the feeling… if you know what I mean 😉 )
